Time zone: EST

IC
Type: OU
Name: Deanna Troi
Canon: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Canon point: end of S7E26 "All Good Things..."
Age: 34

Personality:
  • Deanna is an empathetic, highly intuitive woman who values open communication. But though she is straightforward, she always does her best to be tactful and diplomatic with others. And for being someone who feels so deeply and strongly, she does a remarkably good job of keeping her own emotions in check. However she will occasionally falter in this goal, especially when she’s angered. Push her too far and she’ll explode in a passionate temper. Overall, though, she remains a patient listener, ready to cheer you on or lend you a shoulder to cry on.
  • Friendly towards almost everyone she meets (provided she’s not picking up any warning signals from them), wanting them to feel welcome, yet she does tend towards introversion, forming intensely strong bonds with a few close friends.
  • At ease with her sexuality, but not as physically affectionate as might be expected.
  • Raised on a planet with a historically matriarchal society, Deanna descends from Betazoid nobility. Her mother, Lwaxana, wields this like a weapon, but Deanna tries to downplay it (“The Sacred Chalice of Rixx is an old clay pot with mold growing inside it”) in the face of Federation egalitarianism. Still, it carries over some in the way she carries herself and how she speaks - she has been accused of being “aristocratic” by Will Riker. There’s a pressure there too, an expectation to live up both to her mother’s ideas of what her life should be like and to her deceased father’s memory. She is especially doubtful of her leadership skills, feeling much more comfortable with being an advisor rather than being in charge.
  • But when she decides she’s going to do something, she is stubborn in her pursuit of it, giving everything she has to the endeavor and trying over and over, even when (or maybe especially when) she’s told that maybe it’s time to give up.
  • Has a good sense of humor - rather dry sometimes, but she is also excellent at impersonating people

Background/AU details: Wiki

Strengths & weaknesses:

Strengths
  • Empathic/telepathic senses: can read the emotions of most other species, can fully read the minds of other Betazoids, and sometimes other humans with whom she is particularly close. Note, though, that deprived of this sense, as she will be in game, it will turn into a weakness - for her, it is akin to losing hearing or sight, so she will for a time be made more emotionally unstable by this.
  • Psychology: has a degree in psychology from the University of Betazed and is a practicing therapist aboard the Enterprise
  • Languages: has a knack for linguistics and learning other languages
  • Diplomacy: as the daughter of an ambassador, Deanna has picked up a lot of the tricks of the trade, so to speak, and often serves as an advisor to Captain Picard on relations with other species and as a liaison for the Enterprise. Has extensive knowledge of other cultures and is generally good at blending in with them.
  • Chess: hey, she can beat an android - not too shabby!
  • Poker: she’s got a wicked good poker face, enough where Riker thinks she simply never bluffs

Weaknesses
  • Easily doubts self and abilities, especially when outside her comfort zone. Relies heavily on her empathy and struggles to trust herself with her other senses.
  • Insecurities about being taken seriously
  • Has lived a more or less pampered life, can come across as rather aristocratic
  • Fighting skills minimal - she does know how to use a phaser and is trained in Mok’bara, a Klingon martial art, but it’s more for meditation and exercise than for regular use in combat
  • Woodland survival skills also minimal - nothing beyond basic Starfleet academy training
  • Can be surprisingly straight-laced about some things - doesn’t like being embarrassed
  • Probably depends on your point of view of this, but considering the situation - strong reluctance to kill under almost any circumstances
  • Chocolate: Girl’s got a major sweet tooth

Depowering/humanization: Deanna is half-human, half-Betazoid. No outward physical changes should be necessary, as visually Betazoids only differ from humans in that their irises are completely black. However, she is an empath, which is a genetically inherited ability from her Betazoid side.

Placement preference: no preference!

Character goals:
  • The biggest element of course will be seeing how Deanna deals with the loss of her Betazoid identity - physically (the loss of her empathic senses), culturally (surrounded by humans, none of whom know anything about Betazed), and emotionally (separated from her family, especially her mother).
  • If she ends up with the Cetagandans, I would love to see the ideological clash that comes from that - here is a society very similar to the Federation in terms of technology, yet they are colonizers who place heavy emphasis on castes and genetic manipulation, things that would be anathema to a Federation citizen (particularly those of Terran descent).
  • On the flipside, if she’s with the Barrayarans, while she’d be much more sympathetic to their cause, she will have to adjust to the severe downgrade in technology and living standards that she is used to aboard the Enterprise. Furthermore, coming from a matriarchal society, she is sure to clash with their patriarchal culture.
  • Either way, she will be trying to find a way home - and possibly trying to find a way to negotiate between the two sides.
